Mülheim an der Ruhr is a large city in the west of the Ruhr area in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Together with Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Oberhausen, Recklinghausen, Castrop-Rauxel, Gladbeck, Herten and Herne, the 91.28 km2 city has formed the Ruhr area environmental zone since 2012.
