Daimler pays almost 900 million euros

After years of assurances that there would be no second exhaust scandal at the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer Mercedes Benz, the company has agreed to a fine of 870M euros. The company emphasized, however, that this approval would in no way amount to an admission of guilt. The public prosecutor's office in Stuttgart added that no fraud would be punished by the fine, but only a "negligent breach of duty to supervise". Furthermore, the authority justified its verdict that "official approvals were granted for diesel vehicles, although their emission of nitrogen oxides partly did not comply with the regulatory requirements".
