The environmental zone of Limburg

On 27.11.2017, the presentation of a Clean Air Plan by the Hesse Ministry of Environment led to the decision to introduce an environmental zone in Limburg on Lahn as of 01.02.2018. From this date onwards, only vehicles with a green environmental badge will be allowed to enter the zone.
Limburg has 34,000 inhabitants on a surface of 45 km². The level of pollution caused by nitrogen dioxide in Limburg is far above the limits permitted by the law. For this reason, it is ranked among the most polluted cities in Germany.
On the one hand, this depends on the up to 6,000 commuters from the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate, who arrive in the city every day, and, on the other hand, from the traffic of the A3 highway, when, due to accidents and construction sites, it is diverted through the city of Limburg.
The proposal of a traffic restriction for trucks made by the Ministry of Environment has been rejected by the city so far, because the possible alternative routes or diversions are completely unsuitable.

The permanent environmental zone within its borders includes the area of the city of Limburg marked on the map. To find out the exact borders of the Limburg environmental zone and any diversions from the zone, click on the interactive map.

Exceptions to the environmental zone
The A3 highway is excluded from the environmental zone, as well as the officially reported traffic diversion ordered by police or road authorities. Excluded are also the B8 from the northeast to the junction Limburg North and the B49 and B54 from the north.
