Future environmental zones
German environmental zones which have already been set up are zones in which the fine particles rates cannot exceed a daily average of 50 µg/m³. Because of the strong wind blowing on the German northern coasts, there are very less environmental zones in this part of the country.
Hence, it is highly unlikely that those will be extended to become nitrogen-oxides-zones as well. However, it is expected that the majority of the German cities will concerned by the problem of high nitrogen oxides rates and that new environmental zones, called “diesel restrictions zones” will be set up, in northern German cities as well, where no zone had been introduced yet.
