The environmental zone of Regensburg
On 07.04.2017, the Government of the Upper Palatinate presented the second update on the Clean Air Plan and decided to introduce an environmental zone on 15.01.2018. From this date onwards, it will only be possible to access the zone with the green environmental badge (Euro 4).
Despite the exceeding limit values for particulate matter have decreased 11 times in 2015, the environmental zone, which mainly covers the old city, has been now introduced.
However, the decrease of the limit values for particulate matter in the city has caused an emissions increase of nitrogen oxides, which, in the medium term, should be reduced thanks to the introduction of the green environmental zones.
The city of Regensburg is located on the Danube and covers an area of 80,7 km² with about 146,000 inhabitants.
The permanent environmental zone includes the area of the city or region indicated on the map. The road axis of Friedenstraße is not affected by the environmental zone, while the park of the Thurn und Taxis castle is located within it.
In the historic centre, the zone covers the area within the avenues and parks surrounding Regensburg, without Stadtamhof. It runs south of the Danube up to the railway line, east from the city park of Jakobstor and Prennbrunntor to the Ostentor on the eastern side of the old city.
