The environmental badge and fine particles
Thanks to the introduction of the environmental badge in Germany (also named fine particles badge) for cars, busses and trucks, the German government hopes for a reduction of air pollution and thus for the respect of the European directive on air pollution and the health of the people. However, the environmental badge treats mainly the problems regarding fine particles (PM).
Through the 55 environmental zones already introduced in Germany and through the traffic bans of all the vehicle not responding to the norm EURO 4, the concentrations of fine particles in German cities and municipalities have been reduced by 10%. Unfortunately, these results were not achieved for nitrogen oxides (NOx), which increased permanently in the past 10 years.
