News on environmental zones and air pollution
In the Austrian capital, more than 230 cars have already been withdrawn from circulation since the beginning of the year. The reason: the owners had removed their diesel particulate filters - an administrative offence which the police punish with the withdrawal of the license plate together with a heavy fine. Removing it increases the engine power of the vehicle by around 25 hp and reduce fuel consumption.
Vienna's police spokesman Maierhofer also refers to the environmental aspect: "Extremely small particles are particularly harmful to health and lead to serious respiratory diseases, especially among children, the elderly and people who are already ill. Diesel-powered vehicles have been fitted with particulate filters as standard equipment since 2005, which filter out almost all particulate matter."
