News on environmental zones and air pollution
Iran's capital, Tehran, is also affected by severe air pollution. Approximately 5 million cars and trucks, as well as 3.5 million two-wheelers, drive in this city. During the last 5 years there has been a clear improvement of the situation, as the days with very high levels of air pollution have gone down from 98 to 48 a year. Nevertheless, Tehran recorded a long air pollution episode this winter and even children were asked to stay at home. The schools remained closed so that the children did not expose themselves to heavy pollution on their way to school.
